How to get into the Tokyo Marathon 2027

Race day · in 4 months

Part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors

8 official routes into the Tokyo Marathon 2027; 1 open now.

The Tokyo Marathon Foundation fills a 40,000-runner field mostly by drawing, run in separate pools: 3,000 places for ONE TOKYO Premium and GLOBAL members, 4,000 for ONE TOKYO members unsuccessful in three consecutive years, 1,000 for Tokyo residents entering through the domestic site, and the remaining General Entry draw. A further 5,000 Charity Runner places require a donation of at least JPY 100,000. Each person may make only one application across the member, General and Semi-Elite categories, and anyone applying as a charity runner may not enter any other category. Runners must be 19 or older on race day and able to finish within 6 hours 30 minutes, and no substitute runner may take a place.

An Abbott World Marathon Majors race organised by the Tokyo Marathon Foundation. Most places are allocated by random drawing, alongside charity, semi-elite (RUN as ONE) and official tour-package entries.

Tokyo Marathon 2027 lottery

Who can apply
Aged 19 or over on 2027-03-07 (born on or before 2008-03-07) and able to finish within 6 hours 30 minutes.
Residency
Open to domestic and overseas applicants; a separate 1,000-place pool is reserved for Tokyo residents.
Entry fee
JP¥19,800
Opened
Closed
Best for
Runners anywhere aged 19 or over on race day who can finish within 6 hours 30 minutes, including the disability, wheelchair and Duo Team categories.
How competitive
The organiser draws General Entry because entries exceed the field; about 27,000 of the 40,000 places sit in the General Entry draw, behind the 4,000-place three-consecutive-unsuccessful ONE TOKYO pool and the 1,000-place Tokyo resident pool.
Tips
Selected runners pay in a short window after results: for the 2027 race, results came on 18 September and payment closed on 30 September. Unsuccessful ONE TOKYO member and RUN as ONE Semi-Elite applicants are moved into this draw automatically, so do not lodge a second application, which the Foundation treats as a duplicate.
Who can apply
ONE TOKYO GLOBAL (overseas) or ONE TOKYO Premium (domestic) members; same age and 6 hour 30 minute finish requirement as General Entry.
Residency
The GLOBAL member entry is the overseas category.
Entry fee
JP¥19,800
Opened
Closed
Best for
ONE TOKYO GLOBAL members living outside Japan who want a member-only draw before General Entry opens.
How competitive
3,000 places are set aside for ONE TOKYO Premium and GLOBAL members, drawn if entries exceed that number.
Tips
The member window has run from late July to mid August, ahead of General Entry, and a member who misses out is carried into the General Entry draw rather than needing to reapply. If places open up after selection, the Foundation holds an additional draw for ONE TOKYO Premium and GLOBAL members, dated 31 October 2026 for the 2027 race.

Best for
Committed Majors runners willing to pay a yearly membership for an additional, members-only draw at every Major.
How competitive

Tips
Membership is capped and sold for the following year from December, so join the waitlist early if you want to be in the next intake. It renews automatically each year and is for one person only; treat it as an extra ticket in a small draw of 50 places per race rather than a guaranteed entry.

Run by Abbott World Marathon Majors

Runners with an AbbottWMM profile showing 4, 5 or 6 stars by the draw date who have not already completed this race.

Best for
Runners who already hold three or more Majors stars (four for Tokyo and Boston) and want a separate shot at a Major they have not yet run.
How competitive

Tips
Nothing is automatic: log in to the Runner Portal and opt in to each draw you qualify for, and make sure any older or unmatched results have been claimed so your star count is right by the draw date. The prize is the right to enter, not a free place, so budget for the race fee; a winner who misses the acceptance deadline loses the place. Road to the Majors challenges in the Global Run Club can add extra draw entries.

Tokyo Marathon RUN as ONE semi-elite entry

Who can apply
Men under 2:22:00, women under 2:50:00 (gun time) at a World Athletics Label road race, July 2024 to June 2026, with an official finisher's certificate.
Residency
Must reside outside Japan (a separate domestic Semi-Elite category uses the JAAF entry system).
Entry fee
JP¥19,800
Opened
Closed
Best for
Sub-elite runners living outside Japan with a gun time under 2:22:00 (men) or 2:50:00 (women) from a World Athletics Label road race.
How competitive
25 men and 25 women are accepted, fastest first if applications exceed those slots.
Tips
Only gun (gross) times count, backed by an official finisher's certificate, and the race must be a World Athletics Label road race inside the stated qualifying period. An applicant who is not accepted moves automatically into General Entry for another chance.

Run by Abbott World Marathon Majors

Who can apply
Aged 40 or over and ranked high enough in your age group in the AbbottWMM MTT Age Group World Rankings at the end of the 2025/2026 season (qualifying window 1 October 2025 to 30 September 2026), or among the fastest verified Global Marathon finishers.
Entry fee

Opened
Closed
Best for
Runners aged 40 and over who rank near the top of their age group in the AbbottWMM MTT Age Group World Rankings across a season.
How competitive
More than 2,000 places for the 2027 championship in Tokyo, split by age group (for example 200 men and 200 women aged 40-44, falling to 10 each at 80+), plus 200 places from the virtual Global Marathon.
Tips
Rankings come from results at the listed qualifying races during one season (October to September), so check that your race is on the qualifying list before you run it. Invitations go only to runners registered with AbbottWMM whose results show in their profile by the published cut-off, so claim any missing result well before then; the age group you race in is set by your age on championship day.

Tokyo Marathon charity places

Who can apply
Donation of at least JPY 100,000, or the higher minimum specified by the chosen charity programme, and selection by that programme.
Residency
Some charity organisations only accept applications from people residing in Japan.
Entry fee
JP¥19,800
Fundraising minimum
JP¥100,000
Opened
Closed
Best for
Runners prepared to donate JPY 100,000 or more to one of the 40 official RUN with HEART charity programmes.
How competitive
5,000 Charity Runner places, chosen by each programme's own criteria rather than first come first served; 2027 applications came from people in over 100 countries and regions.
Tips
Pick a programme on RUN with HEART and apply through that organisation's donation system; the minimum is whatever that charity sets, never under JPY 100,000. The charity window has opened in late June, earlier than any other Tokyo entry, and choosing it rules out the member and General Entry draws for that year.

Entering the Tokyo Marathon from overseas

Anyone living outside Japan, Japanese citizens included, should apply through the English entry site and pay the USD 230 overseas fee instead of the JPY 19,800 domestic fee; Japan residents who use the English site are also treated as overseas entries. ONE TOKYO GLOBAL membership opens the overseas member entry and a free route into the RUN as ONE virtual series draws. Guaranteed entries with travel are sold only by KINTETSU INTERNATIONAL and its official International Travel Partners, listed by region, first come first served. Some RUN with HEART charities accept only applicants residing in Japan, so check the organisation before donating.
