How to get into the World Marathon Majors

10 routes run by the Abbott World Marathon Majors itself into 8 races; 1 open now.

Abbott World Marathon Majors links eight big-city marathons and tracks every finish in a free Runner Portal: each Major completed adds a star, and runners who finish the original six (Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York City) receive the Six Star Medal, with Sydney and Cape Town counted as the seventh and eighth stars. Because collecting stars means getting into races that are themselves hard to enter, the series holds its own small draws for runners partway through: three stars unlock most draws and four are needed for Tokyo and Boston, and a race you have already finished is excluded. A paid Gold Club adds a members-only draw of 50 places per Major, and the age group rankings send runners aged 40 and over to a world championship held inside one Major each year.

The series of eight Major marathons (Tokyo, Boston, London, Cape Town, Sydney, Berlin, Chicago and New York City) whose own race draws, Gold Club member draws and Age Group World Championships add extra ways into the member races.

Best for
Committed Majors runners willing to pay a yearly membership for an additional, members-only draw at every Major.

Tips
Membership is capped and sold for the following year from December, so join the waitlist early if you want to be in the next intake. It renews automatically each year and is for one person only; treat it as an extra ticket in a small draw of 50 places per race rather than a guaranteed entry.
Who can apply
Runners with an AbbottWMM profile showing 4, 5 or 6 stars by the draw date who have not already completed this race.

Best for
Runners who already hold three or more Majors stars (four for Tokyo and Boston) and want a separate shot at a Major they have not yet run.

Tips
Nothing is automatic: log in to the Runner Portal and opt in to each draw you qualify for, and make sure any older or unmatched results have been claimed so your star count is right by the draw date. The prize is the right to enter, not a free place, so budget for the race fee; a winner who misses the acceptance deadline loses the place. Road to the Majors challenges in the Global Run Club can add extra draw entries.

Best for
Runners aged 40 and over who rank near the top of their age group in the AbbottWMM MTT Age Group World Rankings across a season.
How competitive
More than 2,000 places for the 2027 championship in Tokyo, split by age group (for example 200 men and 200 women aged 40-44, falling to 10 each at 80+), plus 200 places from the virtual Global Marathon.
Tips
Rankings come from results at the listed qualifying races during one season (October to September), so check that your race is on the qualifying list before you run it. Invitations go only to runners registered with AbbottWMM whose results show in their profile by the published cut-off, so claim any missing result well before then; the age group you race in is set by your age on championship day.

World Marathon Majors FAQ

What is the Six Star Medal?

It is the AbbottWMM award for finishing all six original Majors: Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York City. There is no time limit and no finish-time standard; any finish in the official results counts. Sydney and Cape Town finishes earn stars too, but the Six Star Medal stays tied to the original six.

How do I get my Majors stars recorded?

Create a Runner Portal and AbbottWMM matches your stored Majors results to it automatically. If a result is missing (for example because you entered under a different name, or it predates the results AbbottWMM holds) you can search for it and claim it, or upload proof such as a finisher certificate with ID. Running the same Major again does not add a star, and virtual Majors do not count.

What is Road to the Majors?

A challenge series in the AbbottWMM Global Run Club. Completing a challenge earns extra entries in the AbbottWMM race draws, which you claim in your Runner Portal. It improves your odds in a draw you are already eligible for; it is not a separate way into a race.
