How Bibfinder works

Where the data comes from

Every race, edition and entry route comes from the organiser's own pages. Each fact carries the page it was taken from and the date it was last checked, and every change to the catalogue is reviewed before it goes live. Anything the organiser doesn't publish — a fee, a deadline, a residency rule — is shown as Unknown, never guessed.

How we verify statuses

Every route starts in a reviewed catalogue built from the organiser's own pages. Where a page states whether a route is open, our monitor (BibfinderBot) checks it regularly, respects robots.txt and rate limits, and changes a status only when a check succeeds and the page matches an explicit rule. A failed check never changes a status — it never marks anything open or closed.

Some pages can't be checked automatically (for example, pages built by JavaScript or behind bot protection). Those routes are checked by hand and labelled “checked by hand”. A status that isn't confirmed within the expected window is flagged as stale (see below).

How statuses work

Every status is spelled out in words; the colour only backs it up.

Open
You can apply or book now, on the organiser’s or provider’s page.
Waitlist open
The route is full, but its official waiting list is taking names.
Opening soon
The organiser has announced it will open; the date is shown when published.
Closed
Not taking applications for this edition.
Full
Every place has gone, with no waiting list.
Unknown
We couldn’t confirm the status. Unknown is never shown as open.

What “not verified since” means

Each status shows when it was last confirmed. If it hasn't been confirmed for longer than we expect, it gets a badge like Not verified since 12 Sept 2026: the status shown is the last one we could confirm, and you should check the organiser's page.

Official routes only

We list official ballots, qualifying-time entry, charity partners, the organiser's approved tour operators and organiser-run transfer schemes. We don't list unofficial marketplaces or bib resale: most races forbid transferring a place outside their own scheme.

Alerts

We email you when any route opens or is announced for the races you pick — ballot, charity places, tour operators, waiting lists, transfers and qualifying entry. Alerts are double opt-in: nothing is sent until you confirm. Every alert has a one-click unsubscribe link, and you can change your races any time from My alerts.
