How to get into the New York City Marathon 2027

New York Road Runners fills the non-guaranteed places through three separate drawings, one each for the NYC metro area (within 60 miles of the city), the rest of the United States and non-U.S. residents, and the registration fee is charged to your card the moment you are drawn. Other runners earn guaranteed, non-complimentary entry a year ahead: by running a qualifying time at an NYRR half or full marathon, by completing the 9+1 program of nine NYRR races and one volunteer shift, by finishing 15 New York City Marathons, or by cancelling a current entry. NYRR members who apply to the drawing are also entered automatically into a Member-Only Second-Chance Drawing. Every fee is non-refundable and non-transferable, and NYRR runs no transfer scheme.

An Abbott World Marathon Majors race through New York City's five boroughs, organised by New York Road Runners. Places come from a non-guaranteed entry drawing, guaranteed-entry programmes, official charity partners and official international tour operators.

In 2026 more than 30 in-person NYRR races plus three virtual 5Ks (entered on the Premium tier) count toward 9+1, and qualifiers are flagged on each race page and in the calendar's 9+1 filter. NYRR keeps only a limited number of Non-NYRR Time Qualifier places; if applications outnumber them, the fastest in each age and gender category get in and the rest are moved into the general drawing. Submit the race name, your net time and a results URL NYRR can check, because Strava, GPS-watch, indoor and virtual times are rejected.

NYRR said its 2027 Official International Tour Operators would be announced in early 2027, and the partner list filters by country and by operators that still have entries. Entering the New York City Marathon from overseas

Non-U.S. residents apply to the New York drawing in their own international pool, so they are not drawn against NYC-area or other U.S. applicants. Official International Tour Operators sell packages with guaranteed entry, sometimes including hotel and flights, but only to people who are not full-time U.S. residents; NYRR's partner list can be filtered by country and by operators with entries available. A marathon run abroad can support a Non-NYRR Time Qualifier application if the course is certified by AIMS, World Athletics or a national governing body and the result is verifiable online, though half marathon times count only when run at an NYRR race.

Can overseas runners enter the New York City Marathon?

International travel partners: Non-full-time residents of the United States only. Official tour operators sell travel packages that include an entry (International travel partners).

Can I withdraw from the New York City Marathon drawing after applying?

Yes, you can remove your name from the applicant pool before the drawing. Once you are accepted by any method you are immediately charged the full registration fee, and NYRR does not contact applicants beforehand to reconfirm they still want a place.

What happens if my card is declined when I am selected in the New York drawing?

NYRR emails you to fix your card details and retries the charge for a few days; for the 2026 race the deadline was March 10 with retries through March 11. Applications that still have not been charged after that are forfeited.

Can a 9+1 guaranteed entry be used for a later New York City Marathon?

No. Completing the 9+1 program earns entry only to the next year's race and does not roll forward. If you already hold an entry for that year by another method, you cannot complete the program to gain eligibility for it or any later year.
